Why Do We Keep Thinking About a Conversation That Is Over?

The discussion ended hours, sometimes days ago. The other person has probably already stopped thinking about it. And yet it keeps replaying, with lines you wish you'd said better, replies you invent after the fact.

An attempt at closure

This rumination is not a random glitch: it is often an attempt — clumsy but very real — to finish something that, emotionally, hasn't actually closed. The mind is looking for a version of the scene where the tension finally settles.

What the loop is trying to resolve

Noticing what was left unsaid, or what was felt but couldn't be expressed in the moment, often defuses the loop more effectively than replaying it endlessly in thought.
